Route of our trip to Cape York
Our first overnight stop at a rest area near Gin Gin, NSW
Got to watch the unfenced roadways out west
The long and winding road - but not out west
The van and the tug
Takaraka camping ground, Carnarvon Gorge
Tall trees, palms and spectacular bluffs of the Carnarvon Gorge
Stepping stones make the creek crossings easy
Margie still managed to fall in though
An inquisitive currawong
The Art Gallery
Viewing platforms protect the artwork and cameras are installed
Great forest
Wards Canyon is a steep walk but incredible. Photo doesn't do it justice
The Amphitheatre is a natural wonder
Mosses and ferns grow on the floor and walls. Receives sunlight for only a couple of hours each day
The long, narrow entry to the amphitheatre. The aboriginal men are not allowed to visit here. The shape explains it all
A little waterfall into a pool
The Moss Garden
White cliffs of Carnarvon Gorge
A photo of the Gorge area. You can see why the various arms get so little sunlight. A natural wonder.
They pack them in at the Belyando Crossing 'park'. Not much choice as there is nothing else and nowhere to pull off the road for free camping
This emu was standing in the middle of the highway and I had to almost come to a stop before it ran off with its multitude of chicks
A kangaroo with joey in pouch, hops across the road
Ravenshoe Camp ground
Azure kingfisher at the rear of the camp
The Ravenshoe Rooster. Unofficial owner of the rest area
Ravenshoe free camp area. A great spot provided by the local council, for travellers
How Wendy and Mark face the cool mornings
This section of the trip was very hilly, but pretty
The site for the night. Ready for a quick start in the morning
Gravel road was in good condition, but not for long. Road train approaching
Split Rock art gallery. It has only recently been sign posted
The gallery
Unusual rock formations
Old art which is fading away quickly
Lakeland Caravan Park marks the end of the bitumen. Well, there was a bit more in patches, but not a lot
Mark is up there somewhere. Had to hang back a kilometre to stay out of the dust
A stop at the Hann River
Stopped overnight at the Archer River Roadhouse. Lots of Blue Faced Honeyeaters
